So often we try to ‘do’ things to make us happier.
We do positive thinking exercises.
We do gratitude diaries.
We do meditation.
What if we had to stop doing?
What if there were things we were doing in our lives that were making us unhappy and all we had to do was make a conscious effort to stop them?
Think about what you might do that contributes to your unhappiness or stress or general life dissatisfaction.
Maybe you won’t sit down and relax until everything is done (and the time when is everything is done never comes around).
Maybe you put other people first all the time (and you end up feeling resentful).
Maybe you set super high standards for yourself (and you always feel like you’re falling short).
Maybe you hang out with people who gossip and say mean things about others (and you secretly don’t like it but you’re too afraid to say something).
No matter what it is for you, there will be something (and probably many somethings) that you can stop doing to be happier.
Take some time today to sit down and write a list of what you would like to stop doing.
Then pick one and make a conscious effort to stop doing it. You may well be surprised at how much better you feel.
