Managing emotions is one of the most important things in life.
It helps in relationships, at work, and how we feel on a daily basis. The more we’re able to recognise, label and modulate our emotions, the more successful we are both socially and at work.
Managing emotions, or emotion regulation, is a skill we learn. A lot of the time we don’t learn it in our family. Or if we do, maybe not to the extent that would be really beneficial.
So where and how do we learn to regulate our emotions?
When I was doing my thesis, I used a measure of Mindfulness and a measure of Emotion Regulation. Interestingly, they had near perfect correlation. That means that Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation are almost identical.
So…..where and how do you learn emotion regulation? By learning Mindfulness.
And here are a couple of links to some online courses that are led by the heavy weights in the Mindfulness field:
Jack Kornfield – he’s so lovely to listen to – gentle and wise
https://www.udemy.com/course/mindfulness-meditation-jack-kornfield/?couponCode=MINDFULWITHJACK1
and Jon Kabat-Zinn – who has been spreading the Mindfulness joy for many years
I highly recommend you give it a try. If you think about all the reasons that you might struggle in life, they are all in some way linked to emotions.
Feeling depressed – you’re sad; anxious – you’re scared; relationship troubles – you’re angry, lonely or guilty.
It would be a rare moment we’re not feeling something. So give yourself the gift of learning how to manage those feelings in the best possible way and give Mindfulness a go.
