Tired of feeling like crap? Maybe your Vagus Nerve needs some attention
Think of your vagus nerve as the CEO of your nervous system. It oversees a huge range of critical functions such as, breathing, heart rate, digestive processes and reducing inflammation.
It’s kept pretty busy relaying information from your organs to your brain about what’s going on in your body. This helps your brain adjust your nervous system so that you’re always functioning optimally. If your vagus nerve is underactive you can wind up with things like depression, anxiety, gut issues, chronic inflammation, and memory deficits.
If your vagus nerve has good ‘tone’ it can even help initiate the chill out response after you’ve been stressed. A strong vagal tone may help you recover from illness or emotional upheaval. Is there anything this nerve can’t do?
So what do you do if your vagus nerve is not performing up to scratch?
You can take the long road and get yourself really really good with diaphragmatic breathing. Or you can do hours and hours of yoga (which has also been shown to tone the vagus nerve).
Or for a more fun way of stimulating your vagus nerve you could sing or laugh. You would have to make sure you do this often. I’m sure no-one would find that too much of a chore but if you’re feeling down it might be a bit challenging.
The easy way is to use Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS). Sounds serious right!
Basically how this works is: you clip the stimulators to your ears (you can activate the vagus nerve from a specific spot) and, depending on the condition you want to treat, there are pulses delivered at different frequencies that get your vagus nerve working in the way it should.
The research is pretty exciting. People who have suffered with treatment resistant depression have reported improvements to their mood and functioning after treatment.
There’s also research to support reductions in chronic pain, heart function, inflammation reduction, and loads of other things – Cystic acne, Psoriasis, Eczema, Memory improvement, migraines, the list goes on.
